Wednesday Wisdom from The Little Prince

I believe that all bookworms start off as exactly that - a worm. Yes, we tend to stick with the title "Bookworm", but that isn't actually what we are, is it? We leave our cocoons eventually and become butterflies that fly to different worlds and realities on our magical wings of words and stories.

Some of the time, this is a natural process and the little worm turns into a beautiful butterfly all by itself. (With a bit of help from Goodreads, Amazon, Litsy, etc) More often, I believe, the little caterpillar needs to be nudged a bit. Something, or someone needs to show you what is waiting for you out there for you to really spread your wings and take of into the magical world of books.

My nudge came from a wonderful, enchanting friend. Her name means Star and that is exactly what she is. A bright, twinkling star that will forever be my north star towards the horizon of the bookish sea. She introduced me to the most wonderful characters, whom I might have stumbled on by myself, but somehow, I don't think it would have been quite the same.

Most worth mentioning, is the lovely Little Prince, who was in need of a sheep and in love with a rose.

"Well, I must endure the presence of a few caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies."

"Of course, an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you. But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you together, since she's the one I've watered. Since she's the one I put under glass, since she's the one I sheltered behind the screen. Since she's the one for whom I killed the caterpillars. Since she's the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she's my rose."

"All grown-ups were once children .... but only few of them remember it."

"Grown-ups love figures. When you tell them you've made a new friend they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you - what does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies? - Instead they demand - How old is he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make? - Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him."

"What makes the desert beautiful, is that somewhere it hides a well."

"To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world."

What a privilege to have a friend who believes in unicorns and little princes that tour the galaxy, but also reads the most heart and gut wrenching novels in existence. And then she passes them on. Thanks my friend, you are unique to me in all the world.

What Wisdom did I miss from The Little Prince? Have you read this little jewel?

  1. Love this! I have a copy of the Little Prince, but I haven't read it myself yet. I guess I'll have to read it soon with my little girl.
    Happy reading.

  2. HI Maureen! Thanks so much. It's an excellent idea to start reading it to your little girl. That and The Giving Tree. I think if children hear it from an early age, it might grow roots.

    Have a good weekend!

  4. Hi! I didn't mean to take so long to visit you back, but, well, my life's a mess lol, and bloghopping has been a struggle. But I'm here now! These are lovely quotes. Isn't it so weird how we forget what it's like to be a kid once we grow up? Some more than others, I think. I've never read this book. I think there's a movie too? I've have to see if I can try the book someday.

  5. Kristen!!! Yea!!! No need to apologize, I still believe we have to be super-humans in some or other form in order to be able to do everything we do on a daily basis.

Yes, there is a movie as well. Haven't seen it though. But the friend who I shared the post with, loved it till Kingdom Come. She is an Art Teacher, so it might explain it.

Well, at least now we know we are still "here" and can chat again. Have a good week!

We love hearing from you and if you talk to me, I'll purr back as soon as possible. Sometimes I take a cat nap and it might take a couple of hours or days, but never fear - the cat always comes back.
